Belize is the only English speaking country on the mainland of Central America. As if that is not unique enough, Belize combines several indigenous and immigrant cultures and ethnic groups into an exciting variety of languages, food and music.
Its geography varies from the thousands of coral islands along the Belize Barrier Reef, which is second in size only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, to the unspoiled rainforests of the southern and western districts, to the plains of the northern districts and the mangrove wetlands of the coastline.
Many Mayan ruins dot the entire country, attesting to the integral role of Belize in the Great Maya Civilizations of Mezo-America.
Belize has made the preservation of its pristine environment an essential aspect of its development policy and the country is reputed to have the largest percentage of its land and sea area designated as protected areas.
