Centuries ago, the Maya in Belize
constructed terraces on which they
planted crops. In the foreground of
these two pictures  the streams which
drain the area so quickly during the
rainy season were fashioned by the
Maya as they built up the terraces  
seen in the  background

These waterways inter-connect and
drain into the ponds and swamps
ensuring that, even after three days of
heavy rains at the height of the rainy
season, the farmland drains very
rapidly, as shown in the picture above.
