Pueblo  Escondido

Because of the wetland terrain and well
stocked ponds, Pueblo Escondido is
home to a wide variety of water birds.

We have seen several varieties of
herons, egrets and storks, live here
including
blue herons, night herons, and
tiger herons - called "barking gawlings"
in Belize becaue they make a sound
like a dog barking  - as well as
great
egrets, wood storks and others.

Swamp hens, grebes (seen in the pond
in the picture at the top of this page),
wild ducks, kingfishers,  woodstorks, all
live, breed and or/feed in the wetlands.

A flock of wild muscovy ducks lives at
Birdhaven Pond and some of their
members have inter-mingled with our
domestic duck flock and produced
mixed offspring.

Kingfishers feed on fish and shrimp
hatchlings in the streams and ponds and
perch on the branches above the ponds
and streams  and timing their dive into
the water to catch fish.
